Summer Months - To play or not to play

A few years ago, there was a great Article in 'The Strad', the Classical Music magazine, re whether students should take a break for summer, and it sparked up some discussion when organising our Term Calendar.  Most music teachers would agree it can be like starting from scratch, come September when students haven't played all summer. It all depends on the student though - sometimes a break can be a good way to recharge the batteries, and leave space for creative growth.

For me growing up learning violin, once Summer came along, I was down the country with my family, playing fiddle at social events and summer festivals, making new friends. It was always an exciting time of year, looking forward to collaborating with musicians and a great opportunity to use the skills I learned all year preparing for the end of year grade exams which then gave me the confidence to play with others, and learn new material.
